Summer Sporting Success from Wycombe Abbey Pupils
10 September 2024 - All
Over the summer break, a number of girls participated in sports competitions, from Lacrosse international representation to British rowing championships. There were some amazing achievements and we are incredibly proud of all the girls who go beyond to achieve their best. Below you can read their stories.

Lacrosse
We are thrilled to share that several of our Seniors and current pupils competed in the U20 Lacrosse World Championships in Hong Kong this summer.
Well done to current pupils Yuning (UV) (China), Ashley (UVI now a Senior) (Korea), Caterina (UVI) and Valentina (LVI) (Italy) and Seniors Ginny Zealley (C362, Rubens, 2023) and Carys Ward (C355, Wendover, 2022) for Wales. Miss Millard (Assistant Director of Sport) was also part of the U20 Wales Coaching team.
All players had a fantastic experience on the world stage, representing their country with some close matches towards the end of the tournament. Wales beat Italy 9-8 in a nail biting play off to take 7th place. China beat Ireland to place 9th and Korea just lost to Scotland placing 18th overall. We are very proud to see so many Wycombe Abbey pupils representing their country at the highest level for their age group. A fantastic experience and an outstanding achievement.

Athletics
Maria (LIV) competed at English Schools representing Buckinghamshire, placing 3rd in the Triple Jump. This meant that she was the reserve for the international competition (SIAB) the following weekend. Maria was also selected for the UK School Games National Final which took place from the 29 – 31 August where she also placed 3rd.
Adaobi (LIV) competed in the U13 county team over the summer – it was a very competitive race, but she did extremely well and won it with a time of 12.72.

Equestrian
The British Showjumping National Finals took place in August and I am delighted to say that Wycombe Abbey won again. The team consisted of Cassandra (LVI), Daria (LV) and Sydney (LV). Once again, they finished on a combined team score of zero points, which was particularly impressive given that every other school fielded a team of four and could drop the lowest score, whereas Wycombe Abbey only had a team of three.
There were also individual successes at Hickstead in the Hurst Schools Jumping Championship – Cassandra came 3rd in a class of 115+ entries. In the British Showjumping Schools National Finals Individuals competition 1m class, Daria placed 6th and in the 110cm class, Cassandra Cope placed 6th.
The first part of the NSEA finals for the Hickstead Elite Team, were held in May which Wycombe Abbey won, and we look forward to hearing about the remaining finals that take place in October.
Netball
Issy (UV) was selected to represent London Mavericks in the U15 School Games Netball National Finals at the end of August. Her team played exceptionally well throughout the competition and secured a bronze medal in this top-level event. Issy also received Player of the Match awards in some of her games.

Swimming
Annabelle (LVI) had a very successful week at the Aquatics Great British National Summer Swimming meet, the premier British age group competition of the season. Despite being well known for her sprinting abilities, Annabelle placed 6th and 5th in the 400m and 1500m freestyle, respectively, which is an excellent achievement. However, the highlights of her week were in the shorter events, where she achieved a bronze in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 50m butterfly and gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle.
We have heard that Annabelle has been selected for the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) and given the Talented Athlete Sporting Scholarship (TASS).

Sailing
Pippa (LV) participated in not one but two National Championships in different types of boats, performing extremely well in both events. In the Optimist National Championships, she finished ranked 3rd GBR girl overall, and in the 420 National Championships, she finished 1st in the U15 boat.
India (LVI) was selected as part of the GBR team to compete in the Open 420 European Championships in Slovenia, which took place in June – she was the top U17 GBR female boat and 12th U17 female boat in the competition. She was also selected as part of the GBR team to take part in the Junior 420 European Championships in July in Greece, where she was the top U17 GBR female boat. India recently sailed in the British 420 National Championships in Wales, where she was the top U17 female boat and 3rd U17 boat overall. Based on this, the RYA has invited her to trial for the British Youth Sailing Team.
Pia (UV) was in action at the Waszp World Championships in Sandefjord, Norway, where she finished 5th in her class out of the female sailors and 10th overall; with over 180 boats on the start line, this represents a phenomenal achievement for her age.
Rowing
Eve (LVI) claimed bronze in the J16 pairs at the British Rowing Championships.

Golf
Serena (LVI) has worked hard on her golf this summer, building mental strength through participating in various tournaments.
Her achievements this summer are:
- 3rd at the Scottish Girls’ U16 championship.
- 3rd at the England Girls’ U18 Farnham Series.
- 3rd at the U18 French International Competition in Crécy.
- 19th out of 150 girls in the English Girls’ U18 Open championship.
- Represented Malta in the European Team Shield competition in Liechtenstein and finished 5th in Europe.
- Represented Malta for the R&A Junior Open in Scotland and reached the final round.
