The Troubles in Northern Ireland, a History Society Study

Pupils sat around a table and smiling.

As part of the evening enrichment programme for this term, Wycombe Abbey historians in UV – UVI have been meeting to study The Troubles in Northern Ireland, 1968-1998. Our first two sessions set the scene of Irish history from 1169 to 1921 in order to chart the development of religious sectarianism, while future sessions will focus in-depth on the republican and loyalist violence that permeated Northern Irish society from the attacks on Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) marches in 1968 until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. In November, we will welcome Colonel Alain Chissel, who served three tours in Northern Ireland in 1970, 1972 and 1978, for a talk about the experience of British soldiers in the conflict. In January, the former Northern Ireland Victims’ Commissioner, Kathryn Stone, will join us to talk about the aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement as well as the process of peace and reconciliation.
