Wycombe Abbey Sports Report – Summer Term

As the Summer Term draws to a close, we reflect on another busy and successful period for sport at Wycombe Abbey, marked by excellent participation, strong performances and continued development across the programme.

House Games

The House Games programme has continued to provide a competitive and engaging platform for all pupils. The term began with Tennis, where Pitt secured an impressive overall victory, followed by Cricket, with Barry taking the title in a closely contested final against Rubens.

Athletics

Athletics has been a standout this term, with pupils demonstrating resilience and determination despite difficult weather conditions. Both the Junior and Inter teams successfully qualified for the Regional Finals of the Track and Field Cup.

At the County Championships, a small squad delivered exceptional results, including school records in the 100m and 800m. There were also strong performances in middle-distance events, alongside multiple nominations for English Schools Championships. The Junior team also secured an impressive District victory, finishing significantly ahead of their competitors

Tennis

Tennis has combined high-level competition with valuable development opportunities this term. The Easter tour to Portugal provided players with a fantastic experience, blending structured coaching with competitive match play and team bonding.

We were also delighted to host the historic National Girls’ Schools Doubles Tournament once again. Our teams performed strongly, with the U14s reaching the quarter-finals and the U18s narrowly missing out in the semi-finals. Participation in LTA Team Tennis and a busy fixture schedule has ensured continued progress across all age groups.

Cricket

Cricket continues to grow in both participation and opportunity. All pupils in UIII–UIV have been involved in the programme, with regular fixtures against other schools and strong representation in local district competitions. Teams have also competed in national competitions, performing well against strong opposition.

It has been particularly encouraging to see pupils extending their involvement through links with local clubs, further strengthening the programme and development pathway.

Dance

This term, pupils completed the ISTD’s new Performance Awards. Well done to all the dancers that completed their assessments, they performed superbly and have achieved some fantastic results.

Gymnastics

This term 12 of our gymnasts took part in the Evolutions Schools Floor and Vault Competition, representing the school with excellent effort and enthusiasm. There were some outstanding results to celebrate. Roxy (UV) achieved a fantastic 1st place overall, demonstrating confidence and quality across both floor and vault. Akira (UIII) and Cosima (UIV) also delivered superb routines, each earning 1st place on floor and 2nd overall.

For many of the team, this competition was their first experience performing in front of judges, and they showed great courage throughout the day. Every gymnast should be proud of their performances and the progress they have made. Well done to all who competed.

Performance Athlete Programme

The Performance Athlete Programme has continued to expand, with a strong focus on long-term athlete development. The introduction of strength testing and monitoring has enhanced individual support, while participation across all tiers remains high. The addition of a new Strength and Conditioning coach from September will further strengthen the provision.

Sports Awards

The annual Sports Awards evening provided a fitting celebration of the year, recognising achievements across a wide range of sports. Awards highlighted not only performance but also commitment, leadership and sportsmanship, reflecting the inclusive and supportive nature of sport at Wycombe Abbey.

Sports Tours

The Easter training tour to Portugal was again a huge success, with wonderful weather, coaching and facilities, it provided an excellent opportunity for development, enjoyment and team bonding. We wish all staff and pupils heading off to the USA on the Lacrosse Tour a wonderful time and look forward to seeing the pupils progress and hearing about the opportunities presented to them.
