Wycombe Abbey Celebrates Tennis Triumph at National Finals.
21 November 2025 - All

Wycombe Abbey is proud to celebrate its outstanding achievement at the School Sport Magazine U16 Tennis National Finals, where our players demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork on a national stage. The championship brought together sixteen schools competing for the coveted U14 and U16 titles. Our U16 team delivered a superb all-round performance to claim the Girls’ Cup, defeating The Grammar School at Leeds 4–2 in the semi-final, before edging a thrilling final against Bromsgrove School by the same margins. This success reflects the strength of our Tennis programme and the dedication of both pupils and coaches. Congratulations to Mia, Annika, Angel and Elizabeth on this fantastic accomplishment!
In an interview for School Sport Magazine, Head of Tennis, Miss Alexandra Headley, shared some insight into what makes tennis at the School so special:
A Tradition of Excellence
‘Tennis has long been a cornerstone of sport at Wycombe Abbey, with a proud tradition spanning a large part of our 130-year history. It has consistently been one of our principal summer team sports, complemented by a year-round coaching programme that supports players at all levels. Its long-term popularity amongst both pupils and parents reflects the enthusiasm and strong culture surrounding the game at our school.’
Outstanding Facilities and Programmes
‘With twelve hard courts and twelve astro courts, our pupils benefit from excellent facilities. Our success has been built on a combination of inclusive participation and focused performance programmes, including, inclusive curriculum sessions for younger year groups, regular squad training and specialist opportunities, such as our annual Portugal training camp.
For the past two years, we’ve introduced a school-based Performance Squad session during the Summer Term. This brings together our top players from across the school with a clear focus on strengthening team dynamics and refining doubles strategies.
Those who competed in the U16 School Sport Magazine National Finals have credited these sessions as a significant factor in their success. Our top players also benefit from access to our Performance Athlete Programme, which includes dedicated Strength and Conditioning sessions, as well as a wider focus on key elements of elite athlete development. This holistic approach supports their growth both on and off the court.’

Strong Partnerships and Expert Coaching
‘Collaboration with ‘Living Tennis’ and local clubs, including access to elite pathways at Bisham Abbey, plays a vital role in nurturing talent and supports the delivery of curriculum lessons and squad training, alongside our PE Teachers. Access to high-quality local clubs, as well as the elite performance pathways available at Bisham Abbey, provides additional opportunities for our most advanced players to extend their development beyond school.
A good teacher not only develops players’ technical skills but also nurtures their confidence, resilience, and sense of teamwork. They help set the tone, foster team spirit, and create an environment in which our girls feel motivated, supported, and proud to represent the school. We aim to strike a balance between setting high expectations and offering encouragement, enabling pupils to reach their full potential, whilst ensuring the experience remains enjoyable, challenging and rewarding. This ethos underpins our entire programme and, more recently, has been a particular focus at the performance level.’
An Inclusive Approach
‘Inclusivity is at the heart of our Tennis culture and is a key element behind all our success. We place great emphasis on creating a welcoming environment, regardless of experience or ability, so that every girl feels encouraged to pick up a racket and get involved. By building a strong culture of participation, we not only widen the talent pool but also foster a deeper, long-term love of the game.
Tennis is very much a sport for life, and one that many of our girls are likely to continue playing well beyond their school years, whether that be competitively or socially. By developing strong technical foundations early on, our pupils are equipped with the skills and confidence to return to the sport at any stage. We also regularly show live matches on screens throughout our Sports Department which helps connect the girls to the wider tennis world and reinforce the sense of excitement and aspiration within our programme.’
How important is competitive tennis to you?
‘Competitive tennis is a key part of our programme, and we’re proud to support our performance players in competing at the highest levels. The introduction of the U14 and U16 School Sport Magazine competitions has been a particularly valuable addition, offering fresh opportunities to face schools beyond our usual fixture list and adding another layer of challenge.
Equally important, however, is our commitment to inclusivity. Around 40% of our girls chose to be a part of our Tennis squads, which are open to all abilities. Our coaching is carefully tailored to suit each group’s level of experience, and it’s particularly rewarding to witness the development of those newer to the sport. We’re committed to providing meaningful competitive opportunities for all girls, whatever their stage, because we know how much value they place on playing in ‘real’ matches and representing their school.
To support this, we enter a broad range of competitions to cater for varied standards, and also run an extensive programme of friendly fixtures, including those specifically designed for beginners. We collaborate closely with other schools to ensure fixtures are well-matched, and we’re always happy to adapt rules or court formats so that everyone can take part confidently.’
