Tennis Tour to Portugal
6 May 2024 - All

To kick start the tennis season, during the Easter break, 32 Wycombe Abbey tennis players headed to the Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy for a week of practice, honing their tennis skills and working on teamwork. Not to mention making memories.
Every day started with a brisk walk from the Hotel to the Tennis Academy, with a focus on beating our record walk time and securing 10:05 minutes on the last day of the Tour. Once we arrived at the Tennis Academy, under the guidance of their skilled coaches at 5 Star Tennis, the players took to the courts with unmatched enthusiasm and determination. The girls started their morning with a supreme body and skills warm-up, demonstrating their athleticism in fun drills while being hyped up by a fantastic music playlist.
Every session had a different focus, enabling the girls to hone their skills and prepare for the summer term fixtures programme. While the morning sessions focused on technical points, the afternoon sessions allowed them to apply these skills to small games.
On the last day, the girls played in tournaments and played against opposition from Downe House, The King’s School Canterbury and Tonbridge. While many of their pupils were three years older, the girls played extremely well and performed well. Well done to Alice and Sophia for winning their tier competition and to Tacita and Eva, who placed second in their competition. Unfortunately, the weather stopped one group from playing. However, these pupils had the opportunity to play in a Table Tennis tournament in the evening. The girls were also able to use the newly refurbished padel courts which is fast becoming one of their favourite sports.
Aside from a busy tennis schedule, the girls had the opportunity to relax by the pool and on the beach with evening activities consisting of a quiz and talent show. While the sun was finally shining, a tennis tour to Portugal would not be complete without an annual trip to Maria’s, where the girls enjoyed a dessert and a drink, which certainly did not disappoint.
The tour concluded with a final tennis session, acknowledgements for outstanding performances, and a quick departure back home. We landed safely, bringing back memories of an incredible tennis tour to Portugal.
