Sounds from the Decades

The Music Department started off the Summer Term with a vibrant Stage Band concert featuring a selection of hits from the 1960s to the present day and some of the most promising performers captivating the audience. Alongside them, the String Orchestra and Phire Gospel Choir added depth and diversity to the musical journey through the ages, which included artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Bill Withers, Etta James and Radiohead, to name a few.

It was heartening to witness pupils from various year groups coming together, fostering a strong sense of community – helping to calm each other’s nerves, and congratulating one another afterwards. The enthusiasm was palpable as both performers and audience members alike enjoyed themselves, singing along to their favourite tunes.
Our String Orchestra players said, ‘This was one of my first times playing in a band, and although I also play in the school orchestra (Sinfonia), this was so different compared to it. It was great that we were allowed to wear anything, as long as it fitted into the 80s theme, and it was great that everyone dressed up. The atmosphere felt fun and lively, and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I think it’s such a fantastic and enjoyable experience to be able to play with others, as not only do you have the opportunity to learn new pieces and discover new genres of music, but you also make new friends as well, and learn to be part of a team. Playing in a band also teaches you commitment, as you must keep practicing, but the results are so worth it! The songs that were picked worked so well, and at the end, most people started singing along, making it such a memorable and fun event. Towards the middle of the concert, Mr Ledingham organised a free raffle, which was a great idea, with music-related prizes. Overall, I think this was a valuable and amazing experience, and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone playing an instrument. I would love to do it again next year!’

We hope everyone who attended had a great time, and we invite you to attend our upcoming performances.
