Parents Forum: Sport and PE

On Saturday 21 January the PE Department hosted a Sports Forum for parents. The forum provides an opportunity for parents to hear from key members of staff within the department and engage in conversation to develop their understanding of the programme and provide feedback and suggestions. Mrs Fiona Gee, Miss Ruby Smith and Mrs Alison Earnshaw-Punnett spoke about the current focus of the department and recent developments and provided an overview of key areas focussing on themes from pre-submitted parental questions.

Since the last Sports Forum and taking into consideration what was raised: the match day hospitality has seen a large change with a semi-permanent structure replacing gazebos, increased signage of pitches, and refreshments are now available throughout the fixtures for all spectators. New floodlights have also been installed on the Upper Level Courts which has helped see a larger number of fixtures being scheduled each week during the Autumn and Spring Terms and provided a larger training area for our teams.

Parents also raised that many pupils were not in Wycombe Abbey kit on match days. This has been much improved since returning to competitive school sports with a wide range of sports clothing available for the pupils to ensure they are warm and comfortable when competing. Cricket is now one of the major summer sports with the time provision at School increasing to match that of Tennis and Athletics for pupils within their timetable. We are looking forward to the development of this game at School.

Topics that were covered during this year’s forum included: team selection and the quantity and quality of fixtures across all sports, the development of performance athletes and the support that is provided to them, the growth of the cricket and rowing programmes and the education of our athletes in relation to nutrition, conditioning and psychological aspects of performance. A fuller overview of questions and responses will be emailed to parents soon.

The PE Department would like to thank all parents for the support they provide their daughters in their athletic pursuits, for cheering on the sideline for all Wycombe Abbey teams, and for sharing in our joy of successes that we see each week.

Mrs Fiona Gee
Assistant Director of Sport
