Making their Vote Count: Wycombe Abbey Mock Election

Yesterday, our girls had a unique opportunity to experience the excitement and importance of a General Election. They participated in the Wycombe Abbey Mock Election, an event that mirrors the democratic process in the country come July. The girls were given the chance to cast their votes for one of the six represented parties: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Green, Reform UK, and SNP.

Before the election, the candidates (from a LVI Politics class) campaigned for votes with posters around the School and presented their party’s policies at a hustings event. On the day itself, the girls took to the polls by voting in their House constituencies, with a separate constituency for staff.

‘It was a great learning experience for all parties involved (no pun intended)’.
– Thaisa, Assistant Election Manager

Following the poll and the all-important count, the Wycombe Abbey result was announced in School Meeting Friday morning. They were as follows:

  • Conservative 51%
  • Labour 18%
  • Reform UK 10%
  • Liberal Democrats 9%
  • Green 8%
  • SNP 3%

It was pleasing to see that Junior House had the highest turnout with 82% and Ms Strange was the first person to vote from the entire school community.

Taking part helped me understand the electoral process to a higher standard’.

The mock election was not just a fun event but a valuable educational experience. It aimed to give our pupils a real insight into the activities and procedures surrounding an election. This way, when the time comes for them to vote in real life, they will be well-prepared and ready to play a full and active part in civil society.

It was great to see the whole school engage so enthusiastically’.
– Maddie
