LV and UV Pupils Explore Northern Iceland.

In October, during Long Leave, LV and UV pupils went on an unforgettable trip to Northern Iceland. Accompanied by Mrs Wood, Miss Franks, Miss Durden, and Mr Wildgoose, the group flew into Reykjavík before taking a short internal flight to Akureyri, the capital of the north, where they were welcomed with a sudden, chilly snowfall!

Over the next three days, pupils explored the remote, snow-covered landscapes of northern Iceland with scenery so striking, pupils said it felt like ‘stepping into a postcard’. Highlights included visits to extraordinary geological sites shaped by Iceland’s position on a constructive plate boundary, such as the renowned ‘Diamond Circle,’ home to dramatic waterfalls, pseudo-craters, lava fields and geyser areas

A big favourite, and one of the most magical moments, was relaxing in the Myvatn Nature Baths, while snowflakes drifted down from the sky. These baths are geothermal pools heated to around 40°C, and are naturally enriched with minerals like silica and sulphur that promote skin health and support respiratory wellness.

On the third day, the group boarded a ferry to Hrísey Island, which is often referred to as the ‘pearl of fjord.’ This tranquil island, Iceland’s second largest, sits in the middle of fjord Eyjafjörður, and stretches 7.5 km in length and 2.5 km at its widest point in the south. Home to just no more than 180 residents, Hrísey boasts a small school, serving only 15 pupils from reception to GCSE, which we had the opportunity to visit during our trip.

Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible.
