The partnership between Horizon Sports Club and Wycombe Abbey provides valuable support for local families, offering a safe and inclusive space for children and families.
The swimming sessions, hosted at the School, are specifically designed to provide a welcoming space for children and young adults who might otherwise struggle in loud or busy environments. For many participants, this program has become a ‘lifeline’ for families who had previously lost hope that their children would ever be able to enjoy the water or learn to swim. By providing a supportive environment, Horizon allows children with a variety of needs to learn a lifesaving skill while having fun.
One parent shared:
‘Sebastian’s been a member of horizon for the last six years and swims once a week at Wycombe abbey. His fitness has improved 100% and he loves his swimming. This is a vital fitness activity that we hope he will continue to peruse for the rest of his life.’
Beyond the physical benefits of swimming, the program focuses heavily on social connection. One Horizon parent shared a touching tribute to the program’s impact on their daughter, who often finds it difficult to connect with peers her own age:
‘It’s not just the achievement of doing something new or becoming better at something, it is the friendship that makes the time so important to her,’ the parent explained, adding that the experience, ‘teaches her that people enjoy being with her… That connection is priceless’.
The success of these sessions relies on a dedicated team of supporters. Pupil volunteers from Wycombe Abbey play a crucial role by providing support in the pool, which gives members the opportunity to meet new people and practice new communication skills. The organisation also extended a special thank you to Hazel, described as ‘truly amazing,’ whose hard work and constant smile are credited with making the classes possible for every family.
As the current term progresses, the community is already looking toward the future of this partnership. Encouraged by the progress made in the pool, families are already looking forward to returning to Wycombe Abbey for many more months to come.
