Wycombe Abbey Pupils Secure Places at Leading Universities Overseas

The US and International Universities Office at Wycombe Abbey delivers a highly personalised and strategic four-year programme to support pupils applying to US universities. Beginning in Lower Fifth, the office offers personalised support including consultations, summer program assistance, and strategic planning, with increasing focus and individualisation as pupils progress. In January of Lower Sixth, the office initiates weekly one-to-one meetings and group sessions, which continue through to the point of application, ensuring consistent, tailored guidance. These sessions help pupils refine college lists, prepare essays, compile activities, and understand the nuances of US admissions. The office also coordinates teacher recommendations, facilitates parent engagement, and provides resources and training on application platforms, all aimed at producing authentic, competitive applications. Last year girls gained admission to universities overseas including UCLA, Northwestern, Duke and the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

Earlier this term a group of Wycombe Abbey pupils travelled to Eton College for a valuable opportunity to hear directly from senior representatives of three highly regarded American universities. The panel included Keith Light, Associate Director of Admissions at Yale University; Mark Butt, Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director of Undergraduate Admission at Emory University; and Alison Berryman, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Tufts University.

Each speaker shared insights into their respective institutions, highlighting distinctive features such as academic courses, campus facilities, extracurricular opportunities, faculty expertise, and even aspects of local culture and climate. Pupils were given a comprehensive overview of student life in the United States and the breadth of opportunities available across these universities.

Following the presentations, pupils engaged in a lively question-and-answer session. Topics ranged from the intricacies of the admissions process and the significance of standardised testing, including the SAT, to the role of sport in university life and the different levels of athletic participation. The candid responses offered pupils practical advice and clarified many of the nuances of applying to highly selective American institutions.

This trip formed part of Wycombe Abbey’s excellent US Universities guidance programme, delivered by the School’s dedicated in-house team. Over four years, the programme provides pupils and their families with tailored support and expert advice, equipping them to make informed decisions about studying at some of the world’s most prestigious universities.

The visit to Eton College proved both informative and inspiring, reinforcing Wycombe Abbey’s commitment to preparing pupils for global opportunities in higher education.
