Easter Conundrum: Winners Announced

Over the Easter break, pupils from Wycombe Abbey and other schools in the UK and overseas, including our partnership schools and family of international schools, tested their mathematical wits in the Conundrum Easter quiz. The quiz had three rounds of increasing difficulty designed to challenge the most able mathematicians.

A sample question from round two was:
Georgina can afford to buy either six baskets and seven eggs or eight baskets and four eggs. Both options leave her with no change whatsoever. If, however, she bought only eggs with her money, how many could she afford?

We had many quizzers take part and would like to congratulate the following winners:

  • Chloe – Lower School
  • Mable – Upper School
  • Emily – Sixth Form
  • Jenny – Wycombe Abbey International, Nanjing
  • Maksymilian – St Michaels School
  • Sabrin – St Albans High School
  • Payam – Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation

Well done to all participants; we look forward to the next quiz starting next academic year.

To answer the above puzzle, Georgina can afford 16 eggs!

To add to the maths success this term, last week, we were delighted that the Wycombe Abbey Mathematics Society Team saw success at the UKMT Team Challenge, achieving joint first place! Mathematics teacher Mr Graham said, ‘The team, Cindy, Sofia, Tiya and Leila were incredible ambassadors for the School both in terms of character and academic prowess. A richly deserved result and a fantastic advertisement for Mathematics at Wycombe Abbey.’

Well done girls!

Mr Matt Oliver
Teacher of Mathematics
