UIII Pupils Enjoy Memorable Jersey Trip

UIII pupils recently enjoyed a memorable trip to Jersey, where they explored the island’s rich history.

Akira, Ava, Grace and Gursimar share their highlights from the trip:

‘After the quick flight over to Jersey, we headed to the Durrell Hostel, our home for the next 5 days. We went straight to the zoo for a fascinating keeper talk on Cranes, where we learnt all about this endangered species. After some free time exploring, we went to a beautiful sandy beach and spent a few hours by the sea, swimming, paddling, playing games and eating ice-cream, before returning for a relaxing evening.

The second day began with a talk on Gerald Durrell. We learned all about the amazing work that the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust carries out to save species around the world, and why zoos play a really important role in this. Then we learned about studying animal behaviour and went to observe bald Ibis and chart their behaviours. In the evening, we went to Jersey Bowl where we had an amazing dinner and enjoyed bowling. Dr Dawber and Ms Millar were brilliant!

On day three, we started at the zoo where we made ink stencil printings of animals. We learned about Orangutans and tested our strength with a grip strength trainer. We then had a behind the scenes tour of the zoo and ended our morning with a surprise VR experience with many amazing animals we got to see close up. In the afternoon, we went to the war tunnels. It was fascinating to go underground and see the tunnels built by slave labour and prisoners of war when Jersey was occupied during WW2, with informative videos about what life would have been like. We finished the day with hot chocolate, popcorn and a movie night at the hostel.

On Saturday, we caught the duck-boat to Elizabeth Castle for our guided tour, where we learnt all about Sir Walter Raleigh’s life and how the castle was built. We later saw the firing of a musket, which was very loud, before exploring the dungeons and towers. Back on the mainland, we had free time in the Zoo and debated which animals were the cutest, before heading to St Brelades beach and then Pizza Express for dinner by the sea.

On our last day, we packed our bags before final dorm inspections and then enjoyed our last moments at the zoo before heading to the airport and back to school.

Thank you to Dr Dawber and Ms Millar for a wonderful trip.’
