Emma’s Summer with Chess in Schools and Communities

In summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to undertake work experience with the charity Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC), which supports over 2,800 state schools across the UK by providing chess lessons, clubs, equipment and training.

From the first day, I was introduced to a variety of tasks and learning experiences. One highlight was the Newham Schools Chess Tournament at Stratford Town Hall, an event which hosted around 120 primary school pupils. The day began with tutoring from the CSC staff and simultaneous matches, during which I taught and played against a group of 20 pupils from two primary schools. A memorable moment was coaching Newham councillors Sarah Ruiz and Lorraine Duhaney, who came to observe the tournament. I even received inquiries about tutoring outside of the event!

As the next large event, ChessFest, approached, preparations and activities began in earnest. Preparations included a three-day school event that welcomed over 400 children from 45 schools across the UK, with participants coming from Manchester, Leeds, and Hull.

During this time, I taught and supervised three schools, met several of England’s top players and even got to play a few games with them! I also had the chance to meet Chancellor Rachel Reeves and various other MPs who came along to give their support.

These experiences culminated in the official ChessFest 2025, a large-scale event in Trafalgar Square that attracted over 20,000 attendees. I assisted the CEO in managing the event and its various activities, this included guiding the Mayor of Westminster on a tour.

During my three weeks at CSC, I received so much guidance from the amazing Head Office team and I’m extremely appreciative for their support and encouragement to take on different responsibilities.

At the end of my work experience, I was presented with a demonstration board, which I am now using for our Wycombe Abbey Chess Club and the ongoing volunteering program with our partner schools. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the Chess Club throughout this exciting year!
