The Wycombe Abbey Booker Prize Evening

To delve deep into the Booker Prize list, LVI English Literature pupils participated in a special Wycombe Abbey Booker evening, a fantastic opportunity to present analyses of one or more novels from the Shortlist.
The event provided a wonderful platform for research, discussion, and appreciation of some of the year’s most acclaimed contemporary novels, while also fostering a deeper collective love for literature. Every pair delivered a captivating presentation, sparking thought-provoking debates and engaging the audience through a Q&A session. One particularly interesting discussion explored whether traditional chapter structures in novels are outdated and restrictive.
The evening began with a delicious American-inspired dinner (as we are also studying American Literature this year), followed by an online vote for the book we believed should have won the Booker Prize. The presentations then commenced, with each pair taking to a small stage and speaking through a microphone, an element that added a professional and engaging atmosphere to the event.
A special congratulations to Linda and Priyasha, who delivered an exceptionally well-rounded and philosophical presentation titled Is Orbital Really a Novel? Their discussion sparked lively debate, raising compelling questions about whether the setting of Orbital was impactful or too literal for the plot. Esme and I were named runners-up for our insightful exploration of morality in The Safe Keep, examining the antagonist’s immorality and the societal expectations of women in 1960s Netherlands. Finally, Morade and Abila received high commendation for their fascinating comparative analysis of foils, from Huck to Eva, offering an in-depth look at how these characters contrast and enhance their respective narratives.
Overall, the evening was a remarkable success, with each pupil bringing unique perspectives and critical analysis to their presentations. The enthusiasm and dedication of the pupils, along with the invaluable support of our wonderful teachers, Mrs Taylor-Davis, Mr Lenton, and Miss Pritsou, created a vibrant and immersive event.
