Sixth Form Play: A Servant to Two Masters
15 January 2025 - All

To start 2025 with a bang, Goldoni’s comedic masterpiece, A Servant to Two Masters, was brought to life with exceptional flair by a strong cast of ten talented Sixth Form pupils.
Set amidst the backstreets of Venice, the intricate plot follows the antics of Truffaldino Battochio, as played by the incredibly talented Maddie (UVI). Truffaldino’s desperate attempts to juggle the demands of two masters while keeping his double life under wraps lead to a whirlwind of chaos and hilarity. The two masters, played beautifully by Alice (LVI) and Sasha (LVI), find their lives further complicated by their respective partners and families.

During rehearsals, the cast quickly formed a tight-knit companionship. Together, they mastered the intricate slapstick routines, or lazzi, that Goldoni’s text demands. These were particularly well-executed in standout moments, such as Silvio being hilariously launched into a bin after firing a revolver and when Beatrice and Florindo beat their duplicitous servant with two discarded fish. The latter scene became a highlight of the production, often resulting in bouts of uncontrollable laughter, or ‘corpsing’, from the actors themselves, with ad-libbed dialogue and choreography often appearing unexpectedly – which made it more enjoyable to perform

The cast and crew had a lot of fun rehearsing for the show and the reaction during both performances demonstrated that their hard work and energy was very much appreciated by their audience. As Truffaldino wisely says at the end of the show: ’this is a miracle of time management sir, a thing to be applauded’.
