Colonel Alain Chissel History Society Talk

Colonel Alain Chissel presenting his slides on the Troubles in Northern Ireland

For another History Society Talk this term, girls in UV, LVI and UVI had the privilege of hearing from Colonel Alain Chissel who talked about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. He is a retired British Army officer who received his commission in 1972. Colonel Chissel’s distinguished service took him to numerous countries, including Northern Ireland.

Ahead of the talk, some of us involved in history enrichment had the chance to join him for dinner, where we engaged in fascinating discussions on the Troubles, the focus of our studies this term. Colonel Chissel’s talk was particularly engaging as he recounted his experiences as a private in Northern Ireland in 1970, a period marked by intensifying sectarian tensions. He went on to explain the origins and harrowing events of Bloody Sunday on 30 January 1972.

Hearing from someone who directly witnessed these historic events was a rare and invaluable experience, adding depth and perspective to our understanding of this complex period.
