2024 Teacher Medical Conference

Our 2024 Teacher Medical Conference, held earlier this week, proved to be a landmark event for educators from both local independent and maintained schools. This one-day conference provided a valuable platform for teachers to exchange best practices and discuss strategies to better support students applying to highly competitive courses in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Dentistry.

The conference was meticulously organised by Mr Matthew Whiteley, Head of Medical Applications, who ensured the event ran smoothly and effectively. The day commenced with a series of expert talks, featuring renowned speakers from prestigious institutions, including The Medic Portal, Homerton College Cambridge, King’s College London, and The Royal Veterinary College.

These talks covered an extensive range of crucial topics relevant to university applications in the medical and veterinary fields. Educators were provided with up-to-date insights on UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) scores, the latest admissions data, and essential information regarding the crafting of successful UCAS personal statements. The experts also shared their knowledge on the various interview processes at top universities and gave a comprehensive overview of Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary courses, highlighting the unique aspects of each.

After a well-earned lunch, the conference moved into an interactive phase, where teachers and guest speakers divided into smaller breakout groups. These groups were led by Mr Whiteley, Mrs McNeill (myself) and Dr Fernandez, each of whom guided discussions on the content covered in the morning sessions.

These smaller, more focused sessions allowed participants to reflect on the information presented and exchange ideas on how best to implement new strategies in their schools. Topics of discussion ranged from specific interview techniques to ways of preparing students for the UCAT exam, as well as how to support students in showcasing their unique qualities in personal statements.

As universities continue to evolve their selection processes, conferences like this one are essential for ensuring that teachers remain well-equipped to support their students through these competitive application processes. All who attended thoroughly enjoyed the day and we can’t wait to host similar events in the future.
