Wycombe Abbey wins Award for Pioneering Sixth Form Leadership Programme

We are pleased to announce that Wycombe Abbey has won the Creativity Award at the 2021 TES Independent School Awards, which were held virtually on Friday 30 April. The award was given in recognition of our Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, The Carrington Award, which is the result of a two-year research project undertaken by staff to provide a unique experience for pupils aged 16 – 18.
The Carrington Award programme is tailored and designed to reflect the particular needs of Wycombe Abbey pupils; their high potential and their global outlook. The programme develops skills across four strands: leadership, responsibility and global thinking; confidence and self-reliance; creativity and vision; and critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. In just two years this programme has been exceedingly well-received by pupils and parents alike. Judges were particularly impressed by the School’s use of transmedia storytelling, using a variety of media to immerse pupils in a narrative. Leadership skills are further developed through a two-day Leadership Summit with the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe and the Award also forms a part of the School’s outreach programme with three local state schools taking part in some events.
TES Independent School Awards Lead judge Simon Larter-Evans said: “Wycombe Abbey’s Carrington Award is a carefully researched programme, which aims to meet the future needs of young women, particularly in the realm of leadership. It assumes an outward-looking perspective in terms of global citizenship and is particularly impressive in acting on the need to bridge the social divide by sharing its programme with local state schools.”
Jo Duncan, Headmistress said: “Wycombe Abbey is well known for its academic achievements, but to be recognised for creativity is very special. A lot of work has gone into the Carrington Award, it’s something that helps our pupils be future focussed. We’re continuing to improve the Award and have recently introduced electives, to really use our staff expertise. This award is all about developing skills and knowledge for the future.”
The TES Independent School Awards celebrate the teachers and teams from independent schools across the UK that are raising the standards of education and making a positive impact on the personal and academic success of students and the wider community. This year’s awards highlighted the extraordinary work that schools have done in spite of a most challenging year.
