Wycombe Abbey Team Takes Part in F1 in Schools Competition

The F1 in Schools competition was an amazing opportunity to take part in. Our team consisted of five Lower Fifth pupils: Zi Tong, Maddy, Isabella, Clelia and me. It was our first time competing, and we met a lot of strong and experienced teams from various schools around the London region. The competition was judged on six different parts: specification and scrutineering, design and engineering, enterprise, verbal presentation, brand identity and most excitingly, the race. Our car placed 17th fastest in the Development Category, and overall, we placed 9th out of 34 teams.

Our design engineers, Clelia and Isabella, researched thoroughly aerodynamics, tested it with Autodesk CFD, and designed our car using Autodesk Fusion 360, which raced at 1.510s. Maddy was our Resource Manager and helped us budget the money we gained from our sponsors iRobot, Cusana Capital and Shake the Sky. The graphic designer was Zi Tong and she designed our logo to reflect our values.

This competition taught us a lot of things that have been so valuable to us. We experienced the ups and downs of designing a car from scratch, marketing and handling finances. We learnt how to work well as a team, compromise, and overcome disagreements during the process. We developed skills that will help us in our future and our personal growth.

This opportunity was unforgettable, and on behalf of our team, we are so grateful to our spectacular sponsors for their generous donations and aid. Most importantly, we would like to thank Mr Simonot and the DT team for their support throughout this journey – this result would have never been achieved without them. We ‘wheel-y’ enjoyed it, and we hope to participate again next year.
