Wycombe Abbey takes on Eton College at Chess

Wycombe Abbey Chess Club continues to thrive and recently had its first-ever fixture, an away match against Eton College.

As the team set off with nine pupils from LIV to UV there was both excitement and nerves about playing against a different school. For many, it was their first over-the-board tournament. The match started well for Wycombe Abbey, with a Captain’s performance from Emma leading to an early victory. Following this there were wins from Annabelle and Isabelle, putting the team in a 3-0 lead. However, things gradually evened out, and by the end of the second round of matches, Eton had achieved a narrow 9.5-6.5 victory. Despite the result, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and hard-fought fixture, with many games that could have gone either way.

The next planned event will see the Eton College team make a return visit to Wycombe Abbey for a simultaneous display and talk on AI developments from well-known Master Malcolm Pein. We look forward to it!
