Wycombe Abbey Pupils Explore Career Pathways at Google with ‘Women of the Future’.

During Long Leave, four Wycombe Abbey pupils visited the Google Offices in Central London as part of an event organised by ‘Women of the Future’. This event showcased women working at Google in a wide range of roles and with a variety of different backgrounds. It was fascinating to hear how each speaker’s unique journey had equipped them with the skills and experience needed to secure a role at Google. Each had valuable advice to share, insights that would be incredibly beneficial for all Wycombe Abbey pupils.

The key messages that they shared included:

  • Build your skills by grasping a wide range of opportunities; you don’t know now what jobs you will end up working in in five or ten years’ time, so don’t fixate on a specific career. Instead, find what you love and gravitate towards that. If you can show that you are interested in the world, open-minded and authentic, then this is just as important as good grades or a degree from a specific university.
  • Don’t narrow too soon. Think carefully about the degree you choose; it could be a great option to choose something with a very broad focus which supports you to develop and find your passions.
  • It’s never too late to make a change. If something isn’t a good fit for you then change it and don’t be afraid to.

Finally, the message that had the most impact on our pupils was that it’s ok not to know what you want to do. Look at taking the next right step rather than aiming for a far-off goal. Don’t worry about making the ‘perfect’ choice but look for something that opens doors. In a big company there are many opportunities to change roles, so getting your foot in the door is the most important step.

Pupils, Daria and Ameera, agreed that it was really reassuring to hear that none of the speakers had known at 16 that they’d end up in the careers they’re in now. By following what their interests and strengths, each had found a role which they genuinely enjoyed and saw a great future with.

We all enjoyed the electric atmosphere in the offices, based next to Tottenham Court Road, and were even surprised to see a double decker bus on the fifth floor being used as a meeting room!

We would like to thank everyone at ‘Women of the Future’ and Google who organised this insightful event.
