Wycombe Abbey Pupil Shines with County and Regional Hockey Success

LIV pupil, Camilla, has enjoyed a remarkable few weeks on the hockey pitch, earning both county and regional recognition and even receiving an early nomination for the prestigious Reading Talent Academy. Her rapid progression marks her as one of the most exciting young talents in the area. She describes the experience as ‘amazing,’ saying she feels grateful to be recognised among so many players who trial for the same opportunities: ‘Being selected brings me one step closer to achieving my goals.’

Camilla first picked up a hockey stick at just five years old. Although it began as a hobby, everything changed when she turned eight and found herself inspired by the older players around her. ‘I looked up to them and wanted to someday play at that level,’ she recalls. That early spark set her on a path of commitment and impressive growth.

One of the standout moments this season came when Camilla received a surprise nomination, one year early, for the Reading Talent Academy, ‘I was very excited as I was not expecting it,’ she explains, ‘But I was keen because it’s a huge opportunity to develop my skills further.’ The programme typically begins in Year 9, meaning she has stepped into an environment designed for older, more experienced players, but she has embraced the challenge, ‘It’s hard work, of course, but training with older players really helps. You learn from their skills and tactics, and it pushes you to improve.’

Alongside her academy success, she is also enjoying a standout season with the Marlow U14 squad, who have reached the Tier 1 Cup semi‑final. Her personal highlight so far was beating local rivals Reading, last season’s U14 national champions, and knocking them out of the Cup, ‘We played really well as a team, and I achieved a skill I’d been working on in training. It felt amazing.’

Away from the pitch, Camilla enjoys English and finds School life full of opportunities. She has also discovered a passion for squash since joining the School in UIII, adding another sport to her growing list of interests.

She draws inspiration from many players, but one role model stands out: former Marlow player and current England goalkeeper Mila Welch, who debuted for England at just 15. Camilla also has many people she wants to thank: ‘My coaches, the people who organise matches, my teammates for always giving their all, and my parents for making sure I can attend every session and match. There are so many people behind the scenes who work hard so I can play and enjoy hockey.’

Well done Camilla, we can’t wait to see where your hockey journey takes you next!
