Wycombe Abbey Debating Success

The English-Speaking Union logo.

Wycombe Abbey has successfully advanced to the next round of the prestigious English-Speaking Union (ESU) Mace Debate Competition. Alice, Todi and Daisy (LVI) displayed exceptional critical thinking skills and eloquence, earning a well-deserved victory.

Representing the proposition, the team argued persuasively in favour of addressing housing shortages by utilising green belt land for sustainable development. Their case was both robust and thought-provoking, addressing complex environmental, economic, and social factors. The judges commended their ability to present well-researched arguments, respond effectively to challenges, and engage the audience with clarity and confidence. The LVI pupils took worthwhile risks, interspersing their speeches with humour and flair, using floorspace effectively.

They won over the whole room and earned enough points on the judges’ scorecards to progress through to the next round, which will take place at the end of next month. We wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the competition.
