Wycombe Abbey Athletes take part in Lacrosse Nationals

It has been a busy few days at Lacrosse Nationals for some of our teams. The 1st and 2nd teams played over the weekend with some tough group games on the Saturday. They had a great start winning the first four matches, narrowly losing to Downe House in their fifth game of the day. We had to beat St Cats to ensure we finished in the top two to progress into the Championship, but unfortunately, St Cats equalised in the last ten seconds to make it 3-3, which meant we missed out on a Championship place by one point. However, all was not lost as there was still more to play for on the Sunday and the aim was to win Division 1, with some tough matches against LEH, St Albans and Stowe. The team played fantastically well reaching the final against Monmouth which we won 5-2 and crowned Division 1 Champions! The 2nd team placed fifth in their section, missing out on a Division 1 place by one point. On the Sunday they placed second in their section beating NLCS and St Cats which took them to the quarter-finals against Cheltenham Ladies, beating them 3-2, which ensured they progressed into the semi-finals which they won. The final was a tough game against Bedford and unfortunately lost 3-5 so were runners-up of Division 2 overall.

Due to the weather warning on Monday, Nationals was cancelled for our 3rd and 4th teams and the U15A tournament was moved to Tuesday alongside the U13s. The U15s played some fantastic Lacrosse, topping their group with five wins and a draw so they reached the last 16 in the Championship group. We were then drawn against a tough Claremont team in the afternoon, and narrowly lost 2-1 in the last minute, which meant the team missed out on a quarter-final place. The U13A had a tough start to the day going into a tough group with Berkhamsted and St Swithun’s, narrowly missing out on the Championship by one point. They were eager to prove themselves in Division 1 and started the afternoon off really strong, beating Abbotts Hill, Heathfield and Bedford very convincingly, which gave them confidence going into the final against Downe House. They had a fantastic start and won the game 5-0 demonstrating an excellent team performance so they were also crowned Division 1 Champions!

The 3rd and 4th team tournament is now being hosted on Tuesday 21 March at Wycombe Abbey and the U14A tournament has been rescheduled for Thursday 24 March at Benenden.
