Unearthing the Past: Dr Webb’s Insightful Journey Through Medieval Towns
22 January 2025 - Academic

To deep dive into the history of medieval towns, we had the privilege of attending an enlightening talk by Dr Webb. An Academic Archaeologist specialising in late medieval urban history, Dr Webb shared his long-standing fascination with the built environment and revealed the stories hidden within the buildings and streets we encounter every day.
Dr Webb demonstrated the variety of evidence archaeologists and historians use to reconstruct the lives and landscapes of medieval towns. He highlighted sources such as surviving buildings, historical maps, street names, documentary records, and archaeological findings. Drawing from this material, he was able to paint a vivid picture of what daily life looked like and how people interacted with their surroundings.

Using Coventry as a case study, Dr Webb brought medieval history to life by discussing the town’s art, architecture and unique heritage. In particular, he focused on the mystery of the St Mary’s Hall Tapestry, which is 500 years old and thought to be the oldest tapestry in Britain still in its original location. Dr Webb’s comparative analysis of important details, such as dress, style and symbolism, addressed questions about the tapestry’s meaning, significance, likely cost, commissioner and purpose.
Dr Webb’s valuable insight was not only informative but inspired us to discover the stories hidden within the towns and cities we live in.
