UIV Religious Studies Trip to the Swaminarayan Mandir

To enrich their Religious Studies learning, our UIV pupils recently visited the Swaminarayan Mandir in London, one of the largest and most intricately designed Hindu temples outside India. The visit offered pupils the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Hindu beliefs, worship and cultural traditions in an immersive setting.

UIV pupil, Lita, shared her reflections on the trip:

‘Our visit to the Swaminarayan Mandir was a really positive and memorable experience. When we arrived, we put on our kilts to cover our legs as a sign of respect before entering the temple. One of the first things we saw was the beautiful gold statue of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, which immediately caught our attention.

As we entered the exhibition, we learned a lot about Hinduism, the life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, and the values that guide the community. The displays were interesting and helped us understand the religion more clearly. We then took part in a traditional Hindu ceremony. This included clapping, bell ringing, and the aarti ritual. The atmosphere was warm and peaceful, and it felt special to be part of something so meaningful.

The temple itself was stunning. Everywhere we looked, there were intricately carved deities, sages, dancers, animals, and scenes from Hindu scriptures. The level of detail was incredible.

Afterwards, we had a question‑and‑answer session with someone who works at the Mandir. He explained how the temple was built and talked to us about important Hindu beliefs such as karma and the cycle of reincarnation, which is called Samsara. His explanations helped deepen our understanding and made the trip much more interesting.

Overall, the trip was enjoyable and inspiring. We left with a much better understanding of Hindu culture, architecture, and beliefs, and it was an experience we will remember for a long time.’

Thank you to the RS department and accompanying staff for making this trip possible for our UIV pupils.
