The Inside Track …
6 October 2024 - Academic

Last Friday, LVI visited Silverstone F1 racecourse as a part of Activities Day and for our interdisciplinary enrichment. In groups, we toured the Silverstone Museum, exploring displays spanning all the way back to when the area was still a RAF base for World War II and experienced a 4D simulation racing the circuit alongside Lewis Hamilton. We were even given a chance to race each other in real life – but only on a model track with model cars and remote controls, standing three feet away at all times!
Whilst not many want to be, or can be, F1 drivers, we found out that it is highly likely that someone working in a wider F1 team is never far away. An astonishing 200,000 people are involved in the development of a single car, with even more involved in the events themselves. From enhancing the car’s performance through chemistry and engineering, to conducting biomedical analyses on the drivers themselves, or even working in media, business and logistics – there is no ‘right’ track to success.
The visit offered a great insight into the workings of a multi-agency, global business. We can’t wait to learn more from Wycombe Abbey Senior and F1 Media Content Creator Lissie Mackintosh when she delivers her Carrington talk in November.
