Sporting Highlights from the Easter Break
23 April 2026 - Sport

Over the Easter break, members of the Wycombe Abbey community were involved in a number of outstanding sporting opportunities and achievements, representing both the School and their nations across a wide range of disciplines.
Portugal Tennis Tour
At the start of the break, pupils from LIV – LVI travelled to the Algarve, Portugal, for the much‑anticipated Tennis Tour. Designed to bridge the gap between technical training and competitive match play, the tour began straight on the clay courts, where players quickly shook off travel fatigue during an opening session in the Portuguese sunshine. Throughout the week, the coaching programme gradually built tactical complexity, beginning with a focus on groundstrokes before progressing to more specialised net play. By mid‑week, athletes were receiving detailed technical feedback on volleys and serves and applying this learning during doubles matches that emphasised court positioning, helping the squad adapt to local conditions ahead of the concluding tournament.

The tour also placed strong emphasis on developing the ‘complete athlete’. Afternoons were spent enjoying active recovery at the beach through volleyball sessions or by making use of the tennis centre’s heated pool. Evening activities, including a talent show and a competitive quiz night, offered a welcome mental reset between training blocks. The competitive highlight of the tour was a multi‑school tournament against Brentwood and Bradfield, with results reflecting the depth of the Wycombe Abbey squad. In Tier 1, Astrid and Elsa reached the semi‑finals with a commanding performance, while Jessie and Aura secured second place in Tier 2 through consistent play. The most closely contested match of the week came in the Tier 3 final, an all‑school encounter between Lita and Sienna and Athena and Olivia, with Lita and Sienna catching up in the final minutes to claim first place.
International Lacrosse Representation
Alongside this international tour, Wycombe Abbey staff, current pupils and former pupils were proudly represented at the Home International Lacrosse Tournament. We were particularly pleased to note the involvement of Miss Ruby Smith, Assistant Coach for the Senior England Development Squad, and Mr Josh Wall, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Senior England Performance Squad. We also congratulate the following pupils and alumni on their international lacrosse selections: Amelie (LVI), selected for Scotland U20; Emily (Senior), selected for England U20; Lola (Senior), selected for Wales U20; and Ginny (Senior), selected for the Senior Wales Development Squad.

Athena’s British Alpine Championships Success
We are also delighted to celebrate Athena’s recent success at the British Alpine Championships in Santa Caterina, Italy. As the largest UK alpine racing competition, the event brings together the strongest young British ski racers across Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super‑G disciplines. Competing in the U12 girls’ category, Athena had an exceptional week, winning gold medals in Slalom and Super‑G and securing silver in Giant Slalom, recording the strongest overall results across all three races in her age group. Athena’s parents expressed their thanks for the School’s ongoing support in helping her balance her academic and sporting commitments, a balance that remains central to enabling pupils to pursue their passions alongside their studies.

We are immensely proud of all members of the Wycombe Abbey community who continue to represent themselves and the School with such distinction, both during term time and beyond.
RYA Youth Nationals Results 2026
Alongside their preparation for GCSEs and A levels, India and Pippa enjoyed outstanding success at the RYA Youth National Championships 2026, held over the Easter break.

The RYA’s flagship sailing event took place over eight days at Hayling Island, Hampshire, bringing together 190 of the UK’s top young sailors across seven classes. It also acted as a qualifier for GBR selection for the 420 World Championships in France and the 420 European Championships in Lithuania, both taking place in July.

Both girls sailed exceptionally well during the qualifying races, securing a number of first‑place finishes. Following the final medal race, India and her crew were crowned Female 420 RYA National Youth Champions, finishing second overall, while Pippa and her crew placed second female, were the top U17 boat, and finished fifth overall.

These results place India and Pippa as the top two female 420 helms in the UK, with India receiving a prestigious national trophy previously awarded to sailors including Hannah Mills. Both girls have now qualified to represent Great Britain at the World and European Championships this summer and have since returned their focus to exam preparation.
Show Jumping Success
We are pleased to share that Freya and Allegra have both been selected to represent Monaco at the Nations Cup in Compiègne, the first major international competition of the season.

The Nations Cup marks an important early event in the competitive calendar and forms part of the lead‑up to the European Championships later in the year. Selection for this event reflects the girls’ continued commitment and strong performances at an international level.

We wish Freya and Allegra the very best as they begin the international season and look forward to following their progress in the months ahead.
Maggie’s Lacrosse Competition Achievements
During the School holidays, Maggie (UIV) competed in two major lacrosse tournaments, representing her team as part of the starting lineup in both an international and a national competition.
Maggie first took part in the 2026 Hong Kong Junior Lacrosse Open, where her team faced strong opposition from across Asia. Competing against a high standard of teams, they finished sixth overall in the tournament.

Shortly afterwards, the team travelled on to compete in the China National Lacrosse Championship. Following a series of intense matches, Maggie’s team delivered an outstanding performance, securing first place in the U15 Girls’ Championship.
Well done Maggie!
