Serving Up Business Skills: LIV Pupils Tackle Restaurant Challenge

As part of Activities Week, LIV pupils enjoyed engaging in a Restaurant Challenge where they were tasked with creating their own market stall businesses. Working in teams, they began by developing a company name, designing a unique logo and crafting a catchy slogan. Names included Bagels Without Borders, Miso Hungry, Udon Universe, Dal Noodles and Stackz. These initial branding exercises allowed pupils to explore key marketing concepts such as target audience, brand identity and visual appeal. They then collaborated to create and design a menu, deciding on meals like noodles, muffins and burgers, considering costs and profit margins. While two team members took on the task of preparing and cooking the chosen dishes, the other pupils designed creative takeaway boxes and staff uniforms to enhance their brand presentation and customer experience.

Throughout the day, pupils faced various real-world business challenges designed to deepen their understanding of marketing and entrepreneurship. These included promoting their market stall through tools such as flyers, websites and loyalty schemes, as well as preparing for a surprise visit from a potential investor who would choose one concept to develop into a full restaurant.

The day concluded with each group pitching their restaurant idea to a panel of judges who assessed their business plans, branding and presentation, along with tasting and evaluating the food they had prepared. This hands-on project not only encouraged teamwork and creativity but also gave pupils a practical insight into the steps involved in launching and marketing a successful food business.

The judges named Udon Universe and Bento Burgers as Highly Commended, while Dal Noodles were crowned the winners!
