Prefect Training Weekend: Shaping Ambassadors for Our School

Prefects sat at tables smiling.

We began the Leadership Weekend on Saturday afternoon with a talk from Mrs Duncan; it was thoroughly engaging and very informative. She taught us about valuable aspects of leadership such as definitions by a variety of professionals, looking and sounding like a leader, and the nuances between leadership and management. Afterwards, Mrs Tidbury gave an overview of the types of leadership as well as an introduction to everyday leadership to help guide us within our roles. To celebrate our positions as prefects, we had a pizza bingo night! It was lovely to sit down with everyone and chat about A-levels, prefect responsibilities, and our summer vacations. We played two rounds of competitive Bingo with Mr Murphy using his “Game Show Host” voice, complete with the silly phrases for each Bingo number. All in all, a great way to spend a Saturday evening!

We started off our Sunday morning training by exploring safeguarding scenarios with Mrs Blunt, where we learnt how to act appropriately in differing situations. This was followed by a talk by Ms Chell, sharing how to fulfil the role of being a great ambassador and leader within and for our school. After reflecting on the essential skills we had acquired throughout our morning, we could all agree that we had: learnt how we can best represent our school, developed key leadership skills, become aware of how to foster a welcoming environment, and mastered our understanding of the responsibilities we have

After lunch, we used the remaining time in the afternoon to get into our respective prefect groups and discuss our plans and ideas for the coming year. Led by the Head Girl Team’s goals of Integration, Kindness, and Enjoyment; many of our ideas were in some way linked to these themes. The discussions were fruitful, and it was an excellent way to begin collaborating ahead of a busy academic year. Each group was able to highlight how well they bounced off of each other’s ideas, and how excited they were about building and expanding on concepts.

Overall, it was a great weekend where we learnt a lot about being leaders and most importantly, ambassadors for the school.
