Parenting the Teenager: The Science of Learning

Earlier this month, Consultant Teachers Mr Tom Startup and Miss Tara Strange delivered a Parenting the Teenager talk reflecting on the science of learning, the development of revision techniques, and how pupils can best use artificial intelligence (AI) to aid their studies. Miss Strange discussed some of the latest research from Bradley Busch and Edward Watson, including the best tips for revising, when to revise, and why pupils may not always select the most effective techniques, such as highlighting and re-reading.

The discussion also included the ‘forgetting curve’, the science behind why taking notes by hand might be best for long-term retention, and studies looking at the effects of mobile phones on concentration. The potentially controversial subject of whether pupils should listen to music while revising was also addressed.

Pupils would also benefit from teaching others, making use of dual coding, and visualising themselves studying hard with determination rather than visualising themselves achieving top marks. Mr Startup discussed the dangers of AI replacing student thinking and showed how resourceful students can use it to make revision more interactive and challenging.
