LVI Pupils Participate in Prestigious UK-Japan Young Scientists Workshop

Last week, LVI pupils took part in the prestigious UK-Japan Young Scientists Workshop, a programme designed to spark scientific curiosity and foster international friendship among pupils from both countries. Organised by Clifton Scientific Trust since 2001, the workshop brings together sixth form pupils to collaborate with professional scientists on real-world research projects, while also taking part in meaningful cultural exchange.

Hosted at the University of Cambridge, participants stayed at Jesus College and worked in mixed UK-Japan teams. They spent three days in university labs, exploring topics such as jet engine efficiency at the Whittle Laboratory and proteins in cancer cells at the Department of Pathology.

After completing their research, pupils presented their findings in 15-minute group presentations at the Yusuf Hamied Centre in Christ’s College. The event was attended by dignitaries including George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, and the Japanese embassy’s First Secretary, Education and Sports Attaché, Mr Yasumaro Haruta.

Cultural exchange was a highlight of the experience, with Wycombe Abbey pupils introducing the traditional ceilidh dance The Dashing White Sergeant while also learning traditional Japanese games and the art of origami.

The programme included inspiring keynote addresses by Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees, who spoke on extraterrestrial life and the future of humanity, and Professor Roger Cashmore, who explored the future of energy. Professor Cashmore also had the honour of presenting certificates to all participants.

The workshop concluded with a formal dinner and an alumnae event for previous attendees of the workshop. It was great to see Wycombe Abbey Seniors Alex (2024) and Jade (2024) who participated in the workshop in 2023.

Alex and Jade stood next to one another.

The week proved to be as fascinating and inspiring as ever, offering unforgettable experiences and valuable learning opportunities. We’re already looking forward to next year!
