International Lacrosse Selections for Wycombe Abbey Pupils

Wycombe Abbey Lacrosse

We have had a fantastic Lacrosse season this year across all age groups culminating in Wycombe Abbey being crowned County Champions at 1st, U14A, U14B, U13A and U13B and placed second in the 2nds, U15A, U15B, U12A and U12B tournaments. We are looking forward to attending National Schools championships from Saturday 19 – Tuesday 22 March. In this article we would like to congratulate and recognise several pupils and staff on their individual Lacrosse achievements this season.

We have many pupils who are current members of the England Regional Academy Pathway. They attend regular training weekends throughout the year and progress along the pathway with the ultimate ambition to represent England. The Senior and U21 Home Internationals are taking place in Scotland over the Easter holidays, 8-10 April, and the Senior World Championships is taking place in Towson, Maryland in July. All pupils and staff selected have worked very hard over the season and should be extremely proud of their achievements.

We have three pupils who have been training within the Welsh Dragon Academy throughout this season. They have all attended regular training sessions, refining their skills, and working with a variety of players and coaches from across the country. Congratulations to Ginny (LVI), our 1st team goalkeeper, who has been successful in being selected for the U21B Home Internationals team. Megan (UV), is a current member of the School 1st team, who demonstrates composure on the ball, and we are thrilled that she has been named a reserve for the U21B team at the age of 16. We would also like to highlight the achievements of Carys (UVI), who has been rehabilitating throughout this season following an ACL injury. It is a testament to her determination and mature approach to training that she has been named a reserve for the U21A team.

Scotland have made final selection for the U21 Home Internationals Squads. We would like to congratulate Amelia (UVI), who has been selected for the U21A Team and Poppy (UV) and Sophie (UV) who have been selected for the U21B Team. Regular flights to Scotland have not deterred these pupils from following their passion. They have remained committed to the Wycombe Abbey Lacrosse programme, utilising the facilities here to further develop all aspects of their play. We wish them the very best of luck when playing on home soil in Edinburgh over the Easter Holidays.

Outside of the Home Nations, there are five pupils who have been named within their Nationals Squads to attend the Senior World Championships 2022. Italy Lacrosse have named a squad of 20 players which includes Francesca (UVI), Isabella (LV), and Caterina (LV). To be selected to represent their country at a senior level when still at school is an outstanding achievement. They will be among some of the youngest players to take to the fields, and will face opponents, some twice their age, with many more years of international experience.

Sisters, Elizabeth (UVI) and Victoria (LVI), have been selected to the Swedish final 18 that will take to the field at the Women’s World Championship this summer. This year has been challenging for both girls to attend training, due to travel restrictions, and we know they are looking forward to working more closely with their teams in the build-up to the Championships.

Miss Ruby Smith and Senior Tilly Foster (C302) have been selected as part of the Senior England World Cup training squad and will be playing in the Senior A team at the Home Internationals in April. Final selection for the World Championships will take place after Easter so we wish both Ruby and Tilly the best of luck. Mrs Ali Earnshaw-Punnett is part of the Wales Lacrosse Dragons Academy coaching team and will be working with the U23 Welsh Squads at Home Internationals. Mrs Fiona Gee has also been successful in gaining a position on the umpiring team for the Junior and Senior Home Internationals in April.
