History lecture with Dr Peter Frankopan

On Tuesday 9 May the Oxford University historian, Peter Frankopan, visited the School to give a lecture on the importance of the Silk Roads. He is the author of the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller The Silk Roads: A New History of the World. Seats in the Carrington Room were all filled up and girls from UVI, LVI, UV and LV were very much captivated by Dr Frankopan’s presentation. His argument about how the teaching of history in schools has been constrained by a narrow Euro-centric view was thought-provoking and the girls were also intrigued to hear about some untold and largely neglected histories of Asia, Russia and the Middle East. The peoples, countries and regions he emphasized offered a fresh perspective and an alternative insight into the way the world interconnects and hangs together. As ever with a lecture at Wycombe Abbey, the questions raised at the end of the lecture were stimulating and the discussion was lively and engaging.
