From the Archives: Children’s Book Week

This week is Children’s Book Week and we have been reflecting upon the importance of books at Wycombe Abbey. Looking through the school archives, we found an eyewitness account of the School’s requisition on 15 April 1942 in The Gazette, dated December 1942.

During the packing rush, Wycombe Abbey boarded up all the schools’ books in Fisher Library during the period of closure, safeguarding valuable assets of learning, and built false ceilings in Big School to house scientific and musical instruments.

This story, from a Senior, reveals the care with which Wycombe Abbey safeguarded the girls’ books and the importance placed on their educational resources at this chaotic moment in time.
