For many girls, music is a central part of their experience at Wycombe Abbey. With a wide range of co-curricular musical opportunities, there’s something to support every musical talent. Singing has long been a popular pursuit here at Wycombe Abbey, with a variety of choirs to choose from. Below, discover Evie’s (LV) musical journey and how she progressed to joining the National Youth Choir.

How long have you been singing?

I started lessons when I was seven years old, but I had a love of singing long before then.

What part do you sing?

Soprano 1

What process did you have to go through to join the National Youth Choir?

I had an online audition. First, I had to answer some questions, then I had to sing an unaccompanied song. They also asked me do lots of oral and musical tests.

I practised my unaccompanied song with my music teacher ahead of the competition and did a lot of vocal warm-up exercises on the day.

What is your favourite song to sing?

I Feel Pretty from Westside Story

What are you most looking forward to in terms of the National Youth Choir?

I enjoyed the musical courses I have done so far with the National School Symphony Orchestra, so I look forward to participating in more of these with the NYC. We have a week-long course coming up where we will take part in lots of concerts.

Have you sung at any famous venues?

I have sung at St Paul’s Cathedral, and when I was an Ely Cathedral Chorister, I sang for a BBC Radio 4 broadcast.

How does Wycombe Abbey help you with your singing?

I get a lot of time to practice and am able to use our wonderful music facilities for my music lessons. I’m also a part of the chapel choir here, which I love. I look forward to joining more groups as I progress through the school.

Who is your biggest musical influence?

My mum, she teaches music and plays lots of different instruments.

Do you play any musical instruments?

I play the French horn, and I used to play cello and piano. I would love to learn how to play the saxophone.

What are your plans for the future?

Although I am unsure if singing will be a part of my future career, I will always continue to sing for enjoyment.
