Building Skills for Tomorrow

Andrew Wright stood in front of the UV who are sat in a semicircle.

Last week, our UV girls took part in a programme of activities designed to encourage them not only reflect on their future ambitions but also develop key skills and gain the tools they need to make informed decisions about their education and career options.

They all took part in an immensely engaging and enjoyable communication skills workshop run by Andrew Wright, who expertly modelled how to make a positive first impression, how to overcome nerves while networking with strangers, and the importance of tone, body language and eye contact while speaking. The girls enjoyed the opportunity to practise these skills, particularly how to give the perfect handshake.

They also took a session to complete their Morrisby profile, a highly personalised report that shows how their strengths and interests align with different career sectors and that suggests pathways which might suit each girl. While some reports reinforced existing ambitions, there were frequent suggestions of careers which perhaps they had not considered or even been aware of, offering new opportunities for each girl to explore further.

Later in the day, the girls were reminded of their access to the platform ‘Unifrog’, which offers an exhaustive library of information about a wide range of topics, including careers, global university options, apprenticeships, employer profiles, health and wellbeing support and more. They were shown how they can also use ‘Unifrog’ to keep a record of all their academic, co-curricular and personal achievements, and how these provide evidence of a suite of key skills which universities and employers will require in the future.

We hope that this emphasis on their future allowed the UV girls to start this very significant School year with a positive and forward-thinking frame of mind. This mindset will help them appreciate the importance of not only their upcoming exams but also the value of all the co-curricular activities they can participate in during their time at Wycombe Abbey.
