A Magical Day of Science at Holy Trinity School, Marlow

At Holy Trinity C of E School, Marlow, Wow Days are always a highlight, and this year’s Science Day was no exception! Year 5 pupils explored the wonders of chemistry and alchemy through hands-on experiments that ignited their curiosity and deepened their understanding.

Pupils enjoyed watching copper transform into brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, revealing how copper’s colour and structure changed. Blending Science with History, the experiment highlighted how alchemists, despite their failures to create gold, laid the foundation for modern chemistry.

Pupils were also captivated by a pH colour-changing experiment, creating a vibrant pH rainbow, using universal indicator to observe various pH ranges. This visually dazzling experiment helped pupils understand how pH levels affect chemical reactions.

To kick off the pupil-led experiments, pupils were presented with a series of common household liquids and invited to observe the changes as they added the red cabbage indicator solution to each liquid. The cabbage juice turned from pink to a rich blue or green when it encountered the liquids.

Pupils particularly enjoyed learning about reversible and irreversible reactions. One experiment involved dissolving salt in water, which can be reversed by evaporating the water, illustrating temporary changes. In contrast, heating wire wool to oxidise it showcased an irreversible change.

The class also explored the three states of matter. Pupils observed substances like chocolate transition from solid to liquid when heated, helping them understand how heat affects the state of matter.

Holy Trinity School’s Science Day was a resounding success, combining education with excitement, and will surely be remembered as a highlight of the Year 5 curriculum.
