History Enrichment: Exploring the Viking Age
14 May 2026 - Academic

The History Enrichment lecture on the Viking Age of 750-1050CE, delivered by Mr FitzGerald, offered a compelling appraisal of Norse civilisation, moving beyond familiar images of raiders and longships to reveal a sophisticated and regionally varied culture. Particularly striking were discussions of Viking religious practices, burial rituals, and the archaeological discoveries at sites such as Uppsala and Valsgarde, which shed light on the daily lives and strange customs of the Norse. Marta and Ava (both LVI) supported the presentation with a section on the Viking invasions and occupation of England between 780 and 1042, notably exploring the Danelaw.

The lecture on the Vikings is the final one in a comprehensive evening enrichment programme which started with ten workshops or lectures on Ancient Greece and Rome in the autumn, eight on America between 1750-1968 in the spring, and concluding with two lectures on the Dark Ages in early summer. A particular focus this year has been the use of archaeology to solve questions about the past and we will push this further next term with the topic of Byzantium, 330-1453CE.
