130th Anniversary Founder’s Day

Wycombe Abbey was founded on the day of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, 23 September 1896, and every year on this day the School comes together to celebrate Founder’s Day. This year, Mrs Duncan, the Head Girl Team and three new UIII pupils visited the grave of our founder, Dame Frances Dove, and laid a wreath in recognition of her vision and enduring legacy. Founder’s Day celebrations continued into the afternoon with a reflective service at Chapel, followed by a vibrant funfair. Read more about Founder’s Day from three UIII pupils:

‘I was given the honour along with Arabella and Michelle to lay down the wreath in front of Dame Frances Dove’s grave. Mrs Duncan, the Head Girl Team and The Right Reverend Colin Fletcher (Bishop Colin) were there; Bishop Colin said some prayers as did Padre Paul. I felt proud and a little nervous when we went to lay the wreath. It was a very special moment for us and a great experience.’ Elizabeth, UIII

‘‘The Founders’ Day Service felt like a special moment to reflect on the day. We listened to Padre Paul read from the Bible, joined together in singing hymns, and heard a speech about the history and values of Wycombe Abbey. The service ended with a blessing from Bishop Colin, and then, in a wonderful contrast to the quiet reflection of the afternoon, we headed off to the funfair, where everyone enjoyed celebrating together.’

‘Following the Founders’ Day Chapel Service, there was an unmistakable buzz of excitement in the air. As we made our way outside, we saw the field packed with thrilling attractions and an array of delicious treats. Soon after, everyone gathered to watch the ceremonial cake cutting, and as the knife sliced through the icing, it was met with a round of enthusiastic applause. We then eagerly explored the rides, and within moments queues had formed as everyone rushed to join in the fun. Overall, the day ended on a high, with everyone relishing every moment and creating memories to cherish.’
