Clerk to Council

Part Time

We seek to appoint a dedicated Clerk to Council to provide independent advice, guidance and support to ensure that Council is able to fulfil its responsibilities whilst operating properly and efficiently within the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks. The Clerk to Council will be the Governors’ first point of contact for all matters relating to the governance of the School and will facilitate the smooth administration of Council business in line with the School’s governing articles.

The Clerk to Council will perform a vital role and is likely to have operated at Board or Senior Leadership Team level in the past. They are expected to be a valued and trusted advisor to the Chair and Members of Council whenever called upon, inspiring confidence with their professionalism, organisational skills and knowledge of the principles of good governance. The successful candidate will have a strong intellect and excellent communications skills. A knowledge of Charity Law would be an advantage but not essential.

The Clerk to Council reports to and is responsible to the Chair of Council and the two will communicate regularly. On a day-to-day basis the Clerk will report to the Bursar and is expected to work in close collaboration with him, and with the Headmistress, to guarantee mutually respectful, productive and efficient interaction between the School’s Executive and Council.

The Clerk to Council will work an average of 15 hours per week, as agreed with the Chair of Council and Bursar. Flexibility around working hours is required and some homeworking is possible. Hours will include some Saturdays and evening work when required.

The salary for this role will be commensurate with skills and experience.

Wycombe Abbey is a full boarding school which provides an outstanding all-round education for girls aged 11 to 18.

We are looking for an experienced and energetic Design Technology specialist to lead a rapidly expanding and developing department.  This is an exciting time for the Design Technology Department, with investment, confidence and commitment to STEM being priorities at Wycombe Abbey. The successful applicant will be expected to shape the vision of the department so that it continues to adapt and develop in the changing educational environment. Uptake at iGCSE is small but increasing, and the Department needs a dynamic and forward-thinking leader to build on the current upswing in popularity.

There are 2 specialist teachers and a technician in the Department, with 4 teachers from other departments also currently teaching Design Technology lessons. Our DT workshop has a traditional range of well-maintained machinery and tools, plus 2 laser cutters and a class set of computers. The Department has recently expanded into a newly-developed Product Design workshop, with 3-D printers, an additional laser cutter and a suite of iMacs facilitating high-quality portfolios for iGCSE and A Level.

Buildings Maintenance Operative

12-month contract

Wycombe Abbey, a world leader in girls’ boarding education, seeks to appoint a Building Maintenance Operative to work as a member of the in-house Maintenance Team, on a 1-year fixed term contract, to participate in refurbishment projects to improve the School facilities and to carry out routine maintenance and repairs that are essential for the smooth running and presentation of the School.

Our estate spans 170 acres and comprises a diverse range of historic listed buildings as well as newly-built properties. Facilities include a range of boarding houses, a sports centre, a performing arts centre, a chapel and staff accommodation.

The post holder will be required to work 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday as part of a shift system, between the hours of 06:30 and 18:00 as agreed with the Facilities Manager on a rota basis. Some weekend working and overtime may be required to support urgent defects and School events.

The successful applicant will be experienced with brickwork, plastering, carpentry and plumbing to carry out the installation, renovations and refurbishments of a variety of building projects. A full driving licence is essential. Experience suited to working in a school and residential environment is desirable and applicants should possess basic IT Skills with experience using Microsoft Office.

This is an incredibly important role providing pastoral care to the girls, under the leadership of the Housemistresses and Assistant Housemistresses to create a relaxed, happy and caring environment for our girls. 

The successful candidate must have previous experience working with young people, a strong commitment to the boarding ethos, warmth, enthusiasm and excellent communication and organisational skills. 

This is a residential role and the post-holder is therefore required to be resident within the boarding house during term time as well as before and after the beginning and end of terms in order to ensure the efficient preparation and running of the House.

Wycombe Abbey employs 14 Resident Tutors each year: 1 in each of the 9 senior boarding houses (age 12-17), 3 in our Junior House (age 11-12) and 2 in our Upper Sixth House.  Each Resident Tutor is attached to one specific House and is an important member of the House pastoral team under the guidance of the Housemistress.  Duties will include assisting with wake-ups and bedtimes, organising activities, attending House parties and outings. 

A Resident Tutor will be attached to at least 1 academic department and there will be opportunities to observe lessons and, if desired, to team-teach and contribute to School life. This provides invaluable experience if you are considering a PGCE course/teaching career. 

There may also be opportunities to help with university preparation lessons and to assist with activities such as drama, sport or music, according to each applicant’s particular interests. This may be part of a timetabled lesson, or during the evenings/weekends. 

Salary: £1,595 per month.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced MIS Assistant to work alongside the MIS Manager to ensure data integrity and efficient data processing within the iSAMS database and other associated School systems. Duties will include management of iSAMS data entry, monitoring of pupil registration throughout the school day, ensuring report publishing to parents runs smoothly, supporting the Head of Compliance with data administration, management of the parent-teacher meeting booking system and any other duties to support the management of school data.

The successful candidate will have working knowledge of database software, effective communication skills both verbally and in writing, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to prioritise, work methodically and remain calm under pressure. Prior experience of iSAMS is an advantage.

Hours: 08:00 – 16:30 Monday to Friday, 34 weeks per year (Wycombe Abbey term time plus two weeks before the start of the Autumn Term to assist with timetabling.) Some flexibility is required as there will be the need to work occasional evenings to support parent-teacher meetings.

Sports Centre Assistant

Wycombe Abbey is a girls’ independent boarding school in the centre of High Wycombe with its own sports centre on the 160-acre site. We are currently seeking a Recreational Assistant for the School Davis Sports Centre.

The state-of-the-art sports centre includes: 25metre 6-lane swimming pool, large sports hall, gymnasium/dance studio, four glass-backed squash courts, fitness suite, climbing wall, café, seminar room, changing rooms, offices and plant rooms. Our facilities are primarily for use by the school community, with some commercial use during school holidays.

This is a varied role which includes providing general support to the PE department, preparing and supporting lessons, manning reception, answering general queries, managing pool plant tasks and providing lifeguarding as required.

The candidate for this exciting opportunity will ideally have had previous experience in the leisure industry and possess a strong interest in sport. A National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is preferred, however, we are happy to support you with this training. Pool Plant experience is advantageous.

The role offers excellent opportunities to gain broad leisure experience and develop a career within the industry.

Hours: This is a full-time role for 52 weeks a year working 37.5 hours per week on a flexible rota basis, including regular evenings and weekends.

Salary: £22,000 – £24,000 per annum depending on qualifications and experience

We are currently looking for a strong administrator to join our HR team.

This is a varied role supporting the HR Department, which will include the accurate processing and recording of employee documentation, general filing, answering phone enquiries, requesting and providing references and the administrator of the HR database.

Experience within HR is preferred but not essential, however a strong administration background is required. The ideal candidate will have experience of working to a good level of Microsoft and SharePoint packages. Exposure in a high-volume work environment is advantageous. Excellent communication, written and organisation skills are essential. Strong IT literacy is paramount, as is the ability to apply complete discretion whilst handling private and confidential information.

This is a full-time role, working Monday to Friday 09:00 – 17:30.

A National Award SENCo qualification is desirable, as well as a knowledge of ADHD and ASD. There may be an opportunity to teach in a curriculum department if appropriate.

The Learning Enhancement Department is currently comprised of 9 highly-skilled and well-qualified teachers who specialise in a variety of areas. The department is situated in a dedicated facility with its own teaching rooms and work spaces.

I joined Wycombe Abbey as a Resident Tutor, straight after graduating from university. I then moved to the Development Office and I now work on alumnae publications and events where I enjoy gathering content and telling stories from our alumnae body. My favourite part of the job is developing relationships with Wycombe Abbey Seniors and seeing the lasting impact that their time at the School has had on their personal and professional lives.
