On 11 October, 10 girls travelled up to Charterhouse with Mr Ashby and Mr Murphy to take part in a national 7-a-side tournament. Having been knocked out in the group stages last year, hopes were high that we would be able to cause a real upset this year.
In the group stages, we swept all before us, conceding no goals and scoring nine, with the triumvirate of Evie, Kate and Cordy causing panic in the hearts of opposition defences. Alisha, Ele and Muse were all fearsome in midfield, breaking up play and putting in tremendous shifts in order to maintain a high tempo. In defence, Mint, Vanessa and Zainab were defiant, repelling attacks so effectively that Gill had no saves to make until the semi-final. More on that to come...
After dispatching our quarter final opponents with ease, we came up against Repton, second seeds and another team who had yet to concede a goal. After an incredibly tight match, where the momentum see-sawed this way and that, two stunning saves by Gill in a penalty shootout gave Wycombe an incredible upset win. In the final, against the two-time defending champions, King's College, Taunton, we fell just short, but enormous credit should be given to the team for such an outstanding performance over the course of the day!
