LIV Geography Field Trip

Hands up who has the best wellies!
Hands up who has the best wellies!

A group of LIVs went to a Geography trip to the River Misbourne. To everyone’s joy, it was a wonderful sunny day, and by the time we were all assembled in W2, we were very excited at the prospect of being let loose in the countryside on such a nice day. We met Jackie, a representative from the Fields Study Centre, and were quickly ushered onto the bus and started the journey to our first stop.

Our first stop was Chalfont St. Peter, quite near to school. We donned our very fashionable wellies and proceeded to measure the river for its various characteristics, including the width, depth and wetted perimeter. Carefully avoiding the stinging nettles, we collected rocks and looked at the angularity of the sediment. Those who finished early got to enjoy a quick splash in the river before we were piled back onto the bus and set off for our next stop, Denham Country Park.

Denham was very different from Chalfont St. Peter. Not only was it much deeper and wider, the water flowed much faster and the scenery was very different. It was hard to believe it was the same river! Everyone scrambled for the widest part of the river and quickly started measuring. As we were now well-rehearsed in what to do, we were much more efficient and most people found the time for some river fun before we had to go back to school.

It was a very fun (and rather wet) trip and it helped us to understand rivers much more that we would have in a classroom. We all enjoyed it thoroughly and are looking forward to our next Geography fieldtrip.
