Since 1896 Wycombe Abbey School has been at the forefront of girls’ education and we are fortunate in the number of benefactors who have helped to turn the vision of the School’s founder, Dame Frances Dove, into reality. From the time of its Foundation, Wycombe has raised funds to enable the School to provide the facilities that have enhanced the education of so many young women.
Wycombe Abbey students consistently achieve first class academic results but the benefits of an education here extend far beyond the classroom: we are making a difference for today’s pupils - the women of tomorrow who will go on to make their mark in the world.
To continue to do this and ensure that Wycombe Abbey remains a centre of excellence as one of the world’s leading schools, the generosity of donors is needed more than ever.
Maintaining the outstanding reputation of Wycombe Abbey is vital. Doing so means investing in modern facilities and talented teachers, therefore attracting the brightest and the best pupils. In common with most independent girls’ schools, we have no significant endowment fund to assist with the funding of major projects or the continuing provision of bursaries. The modernisation of our facilities, the management of our historically important site and buildings, the development of an expanding curriculum, and the future funding of bursaries, are some of the cost pressures we face.
The Development Department exists to raise money from donors (parents, Seniors, trusts and corporate bodies) by cultivating a culture of philanthropic support.
We are also responsible for alumnae relations, maintaining the School’s network of former students and communicating with them on a regular basis.
The Development Department at Wycombe Abbey was established in 2003 and the Sports Centre and the Modern Languages Centre both owe their existence to the generosity of donors, as do the new Chapel chairs and many other enhancements to the School.
Bursaries are an important objective of the Development Department's work. A major fundraising project is the establishment of a Bursary Endowment Fund which will allow able girls whose families cannot afford the fees, to benefit from a Wycombe Abbey education.
All funds raised are channelled through the Wycombe Abbey Foundation, a charitable trust, chaired by Lord Justice May, a former parent.
Our Development Director is Barbara Armitage and she can be contacted at armitageb@wycombeabbey.com.
