Seniors' Day 2010

The damp weather could not dampen the spirits of the 150 attendees of Wycombe Abbey's Seniors' Day in May. Seniors, husbands, partners, children and former staff all helped to make the day an incredible success.

Everyone was invited to attend morning Chapel, followed by coffee in Fisher Library which gave guests the chance to catch up with old friends, some of whom hadn't seen one another for years. Visits to Houses and drinks in Fisher Library gave everyone even more time to reminisce before a buffet lunch which was somewhat different to those enjoyed by Seniors from the earlier years!

Dame Rosalind Savill, who left Wycombe Abbey in 1967, was our distinguished speaker, and she entertained guests with a humorous account of her time at Wycombe Abbey and her life afterwards, including the events and decisions that led her to her current role as Director of the Wallace collection and one of the world's leading authorities on Sèvres porcelain.

So that Seniors could fully enjoy lunch, the children had their own programme The adults (mostly dads!) then had the opportunity to join them for swimming and other activities while others enjoyed the grounds and more chatting.

Finally, everyone was invited to tea and to the Summer Concert.

It was wonderful to see so many Seniors with their families and from so many eras – from the 1930s to the 2000s. Mrs Hall, Wycombe's Headmistress, spoke for many present staff when she said: ‘I feel tremendously honoured to be the Head of Wycombe Abbey when I meet Seniors who have such close feelings towards the School, even though they were pupils here scores of years ago. It is also very pleasing to see younger Seniors returning especially when they are able to catch up with the teachers who were such an important part of their lives. I hope, too, that Seniors realise the important part they played in the lives of their teachers. Seniors' Day was a marvellous event for all of us and I hope it was so for every Senior who was able to attend.
