We are frequently asked “Why does Wycombe Abbey appear in first place in some newspaper league tables and further down the ranking in others?”
League tables are produced by mainstream media outlets to compare and contrast the A level and GCSE results of schools across the country. Each media outlet devises its own criteria for ranking schools, and as a result of this, Wycombe Abbey's position within tables can vary considerably.
To assist in understanding the School's rankings, the differing criterion used for each examination category is explained below.
|
A level |
Percentage of subject entries graded A or A and B. |
| Average UCAS point score for candidate. Please note, this point score may or may not include General Studies or schools taking The International Baccalaureate. Point scores for International Baccalaureate are high. |
|
GCSE |
Average points per candidate. Please note, most girls at Wycombe take 10 subjects. Some schools enter all candidates for 11 or more subjects resulting in a higher total point score, and therefore a higher average point score per candidate. |
| Percentage of A* or A and A* grades. |
Like many independent schools Wycombe Abbey is awarded 0% for the number of pupils achieving five A*-C grades at GCSE (including English and Mathematics) in government league tables. This is because the school enters pupils for the IGCSE in several subjects, including Mathematics and the sciences. The government does not recognise IGCSEs in its league table. The schools feels that in many subjects the IGCSE offers a more rigorously academic syllabus and is better preparation for A level.
