Science Symposium 2011
The second biannual Science Symposium day took place this term, and the girls all thoroughly enjoyed a day of 'hands on' Science. UIII and LIV encountered a range of creepy crawlies when they were entertained by 'The Bug Man', Martin Rapley. In a lively presentation in the theatre by Dr Neil Downie, UIII and UV fired carrot bazookas and rode on a home-made hovercraft. UIV participated in a “What's my line?” activity, involving 15 STEM ambassadors from industry, revealing how they use Science in their careers. Steve Mould (of Blue Peter fame) gave a stimulating and exciting talk to UIV and LV on Physics versus Maths, involving various challenging and surprising scientific illusions. LV also had the opportunity to throw themselves at a Velcro wall and see how much gravitational potential energy they could gain. UV released a flurry of Chinese lanterns into the Wycombe sky at dusk and LVI physicists spent the day designing and constructing trebuchets which were tested in a mock battle. At break, the Chemistry Department ran their own home-made sherbet stall for girls to enjoy. The day was rounded off by an inspiring VI Form lecture from Dr Simon Singh on The Big Bang.
