LV at Science Live

LV were given the chance to hear five enthralling lectures from leading scientists at the GCSE Science Live event in Oxford. Dr Kate Lancaster explained how lasers were being used to create nuclear fusion. Professor Steve Jones had the audience clasping their hands and attempting to roll their tongues during his lecture on genetics. He taught the girls that if you unravel all of the DNA in your body it would stretch to the Moon and back 8,000 times! Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock (with the help of her ten month old baby) explained how she gained permission to throw an apple in the air on the BBC News in order to demonstrate Stephen Hawking's parabolic flight on the vomit comet. Dr Andrea Sella amazed the audience by producing chemical reactions that continually changed colour. He then linked this to the population of rabbits and foxes in a field and the spots on a leopard. Finally Professor Richard Dawkins traced our ancestors all the way back to fish in an engaging lecture on Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.
