County Athletics

18 girls were chosen to represent Wycombe District at the County Athletics Championships held on Saturday 14 June at Wycombe Sports Centre. All the girls who took part contributed points for the winning district. Wycombe finished first in the Intermediate girls and second in the Junior girls.

From this 4 girls were selected to represent Buckinghamshire at the Regional Championships on Saturday 21 June. These were Emma F, Amy B, Imogen R and Yvette TD. Congratulations to all of the girls.

New Headmistress

We are delighted that Mrs Cynthia Hall will succeed Mrs Davies as Headmistress of Wycombe Abbey in September 2008 and look forward to her joining us.

MRS CYNTHIA HALL is a former President of the Girls’ Schools Association and Head of The School of St Helen and St Katharine in Abingdon. Mrs Hall sits on the Board of the Qualification and Curriculum Authority and on the Independent and State School Partnerships Forum which reports to the Schools Minister. Her current school plays a central role in furthering cross-sector work in Oxfordshire through the Oxfordshire Independent and State Schools Partnership of which she is a trustee. She is also Co-Chair of the GSA/HMC Universities Sub-Committee.

Mrs Hall is in her fourteenth year of Headship having previously taught English in independent girls’ schools. She read English at St Anne’s College, Oxford, where she co-edited ISIS the student magazine. She is a Fellow of the RSA and a Governor of Portsmouth Grammar School. Her interests are ballet, opera, riding, swimming, and walking in the countryside. She is married with two children aged 18 and 21.

Old Fashioned Sports Day

The sun was shining for the UIII and LIV girls as they took part in Wycombe Abbey’s Old Fashioned Sport’s Day last Sunday.  The girls competed in their senior house teams in an obstacle course, a three-legged race, a sack race and an egg and spoon race.  They had a short break to recover their energy with a drink of squash and then finished off the afternoon with a skipping race, a dressing up race and a relay race.

The event is designed to help the UIII get to know the LIV better, so as to ease their transition into their senior houses in September.  It worked extremely well, with a fun time had by all and house spirit definitely came to the fore!  The afternoon was topped off with ice creams and a prize giving ceremony.  Barry were in first place, Cloister in second and Butler in third, though all the girls did really well.  Prizes were also awarded to Pitt for effort and to Wendover for team spirit.  Well done everyone!

Just a minute

On the evening of Wednesday 12 June, the school gathered for an exciting episode of Wycombe Abbey ‘Just a minute’: staff versus girls. Ably chaired by Idina G, the teams battled it out on issues such as ‘the superior sex’ and ‘why I love queuing’.  Trailing at one stage by 0 points to 9, the staff (Mrs Best, Mr Franks, Mrs Sherwood and Madame Goddard) made an excellent comeback, only narrowly losing by 14 points to 17.  Congratulations to Rachel K-C, Henrietta B, Octavia S and Scarlett K on a worthy victory. Many thanks also to Katia R for keeping score so successfully.

Boris, Brian and Ken fight it out

During May 387 students and staff cast their votes. The staff vote was incredibly close between Brian Paddick (Lib Dems) and Boris Johnson (Conservative), with Paddick narrowly wining victory. The student vote was not quite as close. Johnson won with 219 votes, the next candidate winning only 61. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ken Livingstone only managed 20 “first choice” votes from the students. Overall, the whole school vote put Boris Johnson in first place with 58% of the vote and 226 votes. Johnson was followed by Brian Paddick – a Liberal Democrat with 67 votes, Sian Berry from the Green Party with 35 votes, Ken Livingston with 26 votes, Alan Craig – Christian Choice – with 14 votes, Richard Barnbrook from the BNP with 7 votes, Winston McKenzie an Independent boxer-cum-politician with 5 votes, Gerard Batten (UKIP) with 4 and finally Matt O’Connor from the English Democrats with only 3 votes. Many thanks to Ali, chairman of the Politics Society and Natasha K for all their help – and to all those who voted!
